Fraud Alert

posted Feb 10, 2010 6:46 PM by Cavan Kelly

I don't have exact details yet but everyone should be aware of suspect applications running on cell phones.  We've just been hit with a massive bill for US long distance and texting - dozens of calls and hundreds of text messages.  These calls and texts were made one after the other over a period of a week or so.  Rogers, of course, is in no hurry to help as they are making a criminal 30 cents a minute for the calls - more than 6 times the rate available through an aggregator.  Clearly, there is no incentive for them to investigate.

Nitix Email Security Alert

posted Sep 29, 2009 12:37 PM by Cavan Kelly

As we have noted previously, IBM will no longer sell anti-virus and anti-spam license renewals for Nitix based servers.  If you are running Nitix as your email server, it is imperative that you have other anti-malware protection in place prior to the expiration of your existing licenses.  If you are considering a hosted security service, it is critical that you do not continue to use the Nitix based server as a gateway device.  The key to a successful hosted email security deployment is to ensure that your mail server will accept mail only from the hosted service.  In their infinite wisdom, Net Integration Technologies (now IBM) disabled this ability in qmail, the component responsible for delivering email.  We cannot stress this strongly enough, you must either turn off email services or move the Nitix server behind a firewall before your current anti-virus protection expires.  If you have any questions please contact us immediately.

Sometimes things go as planned, other times, not so much.  And so goes the summer of 2009.  It was shaping up to be a time of great change.  And that was before illness and death hit close to home.  Hopefully the worst is over and we can turn our attention to resolving some outstanding issues.

Our new server appliance is available and we've hit a home run.  We've bested Nitix's single best feature, the IDB.  In production systems we're performing a full backup of 100GB of data in less than an hour.  Incremental backups are running about a minute.  We're very pleased and, more importantly, our clients are as well.

Google is upgrading Google Apps at an astounding pace having recently added Blackberry Enterprise Server and Microsoft Outlook Synchronization to the list of features.  We're happy to announce that we've been selected to offer Message Discovery to small business customers.  This is a big deal because we are able to offer mail archiving without the $1500/US minimum fee charged directly by Google's Postini division.

As alluded to in our last update, we've partnered with the world's largest web hosting company in order to offer world class hosting at a ridiculously low price point with 24/7 tech support.  There are a seemingly limitless array of options and features available.  Please check out our new Web and Domain Services site.

Recent changes in the technology landscape give us pause to consider the future of our business as well as the advice we are providing our clients.

The success of hosted services such as Salesforce.com, Netsuite and Freshbooks has proven two things: customers are willing to have business critical data stored on equipment outside their physical control and, from a cost perspective, it's in their best interests to do so.

Power costs are rising.  Toronto Hydro's plans to charge higher rates for electricity during the business day are well documented.  This misguided scheme will hurt three groups especially hard: the elderly, families with young children and small business.  Each of these groups will, of necessity, consume most of their power during the most expensive periods.

The spam problem is not going away.  In fact, it's worse than ever.  Email, the single most utilized computer application of all time, is in danger of collapsing under the weight.  One of our clients, a web based sales organization with only 5 employees, gets over 8 million spam messages a month.  Even if their self-hosted email server and spam filtering solution could handle the load - it couldn't - the cost of exceeding  their monthly bandwidth allocation was prohibitive.  Hosted filtering was the only viable solution.

We've listened.  We've learned.  We're making some changes.

Effective May 15th, we're closing our own web and email hosting service.  Others can do it better and cheaper but can't offer the personalized service that we provide.  To give you the best of both worlds, we're partnering with the leaders in hosted applications.  We'll provide assistance with procurement, implementation, data migration, support and training.  More information will be coming soon.

Over the next few weeks, we'll be introducing our new on-premise server with full support for virtualized computing environments.

It's all about choice and offering you the best, most reliable, cost effective, business computing platform available anywhere.
