UPS

Uninterruptible Power Supplies

The quality of power reaching your computer systems can have a profound impact on both the operation and the lifespan of the equipment. Typically, a UPS is viewed simply as the box that keeps a system running when the lights go out but, for the average small business that doesn't have a diesel generator ready to kick in, the more important function will be the graceful shutdown of the protected equipment.  Additionally, a higher quality UPS will condition the incoming power to protect your systems from the sags and spikes that are all too common on the public utility grid.

Three different UPS types are commonly used to protect IT equipment:
  • Standby UPSs allow the equipment to run off utility power until the UPS detects a problem at which point the UPS switches to battery power to protect against sags, surges or outages.

  • Line-interactive UPSs regulate voltage by boosting input utility voltage up or moderating (bucking) it down as necessary before allowing it to pass to the protected equipment -- or resort to battery power.

  • Double-conversion UPSs isolate equipment from raw utility power -- converting power for AC to DC and back to AC again, to deliver the cleanest power and highest protection.

Power problems?

Power outages are just one of nine common power problems that impact power quality and availability.  In many cases, they are localized within a building or industrial complex and are not publicly reported.  As a result, power-related problems occur far more frequently than you might be aware.

The Nine Common Power Problems:

  1. Power outage (blackout)
  2. Power Sag
  3. Power Surge
  4. Undervoltage (brownout)
  5. Overvoltage
  6. Switching transient
  7. Line noise
  8. Frequency variation
  9. Harmonic distortion
All UPSs are not created equal and many will not not protect you from all of these problems.
